Mattie Mae Rachel, age 92, passed away in the comfort of her home Saturday, September 14, 2019. She made the transition peacefully as she heard the voice of Jesus say: “Come unto me and rest.”
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. from the Minton Spring A.M.E. Church, Warthen, GA with the Rev. Otis Kemp, officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
“Matt” as she was respectfully called, was the daughter of the late Sam Rachel and Lillian (Hunter) Rachel. She was born on July 09, 1927 in Sandersville, GA. and was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Minton Spring A.M.E. Church where she served in many capacities including; choir , usher board, stewardess board and wherever she was needed.
You could often find her on any given Sunday at some choir anniversary or gospel sing as she proudly sang praises to God either with the church choir or as a part of the group “The Singing Angels”.
Matt was the last surviving sibling in a family of 10 children: Bertha Bentley,Lillie M. Kemp,Mary Davis,Alice Bellemay, Robert Rachel,Willie Rachel, Henry L. Rachel,Sr.,Gordon Rachel and Thomas Rachel who all preceded her in death.
Matt lived a long happy life of 92 years, majority of which were in Sandersville and a few years in Miami ,FL.
After moving back to Washington County, she stubbornly insisted on living independently in her own home and did so until her passing.
In a life full of love and happiness Matt loved cooking,sewing, going to church and she especially loved her hats and lots of conversation and laughter and love.
She leaves behind to cherish her loving smile and precious memories;a devoted cousin :Larry (Mary)Warthen, Sandersville,GA god daughter;Mary Ann Carr, Sandersville, GA and numerous nieces including a devoted niece; Minnie Rachel (Larry)and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins, and friends.
